Training for Social Sector Specialists on “Organization of Social Protection of the Population in Emergency Situations”

02.03.2023

Once again, the Armenian Association of Social Workers has directed its efforts towards the development of the abilities of social sector professionals to respond to emergency situations.

Continuously emphasizing the need for effective organization of social protection of the population in the context of emergency situations, the AASW continues to work towards the development of the capabilities of the social sector workforce in communities.

At the current stage of the implementation process, the first such meeting-course took place in the city of Goris, Syunik marz. The training included professionals working in the community–such as social workers from the state and non-state sectors, doctors, teachers, etc.

As mentioned by the President of the Association, Mira Antonyan, "In case of any disaster or calamity, being prepared significantly reduces losses and their possible negative consequences. We try to help professionals in this preparation, so that they know how to adequately and quickly respond to the possible emergency situations they encounter, and thereby avoid possible large losses of time and other resources."

Considering the high probability of professional burnout, especially in emergency situations, teaching some professional self-care skills is also an important part of the course. In this sense, as Mrs. Antonyan points out: "We realized that it is very important to work with the difficulties of the specialists themselves, because, unfortunately, the helping specialists, going through all of this in their turn, while being the helpers, bear the impact of all the problems themselves. The specialist himself finds himself in a very dual and complex situation, which not everyone can successfully overcome. In this regard, when developing the methodology, we added a very important component, that is, the circumstance of ‘helping those who help’.”

According to the program’s framework, capacity building courses are planned to be held in the Vayots Dzor region.

The training is carried out by ACTED in conjunction with the "Product Supply Preparation and Emergency Coordination Assistance" project in cooperation with its partners: the Armenian Social Workers Association, Doctors of the World Organization, and the Goris Press Club. Project processes were made possible through the financial support of Start Fund.
